Nonverbal Communication

People Notice More Than You Think

Note 049 of 62 · 258 words · Learn How To Deal With People

Communication starts before the first sentence.

Your face. Your tone. Your energy. The way you walk into a room. The way you look at someone while they're speaking.

People are receiving a message before you've said much of anything.

Teaching taught me that. At first I assumed students were listening to what I said. The explanation. The instructions. The lesson.

They were watching everything else too. If I looked excited, they noticed. If I looked frustrated, they noticed. If I looked tired, they definitely noticed. Sometimes the mood of the room shifted before I'd finished my first sentence.

You see it everywhere. At work. In interviews. On dates. In meetings.

The person across from you is picking up things you're not thinking about. Your tone. Your attention. Your eye contact. Whether you seem interested. Whether you're actually listening.

It's easy to focus only on what you're going to say. The message often arrives before the words.

You might mean to be friendly, but if you're on your phone the whole time, that's not what lands. You might mean to sound confident, but if you keep undercutting yourself out loud, that sends its own message. You might mean to show interest, but if your attention drifts, people feel it.

Communication is attention, presence, interest and respect. The signals people pick up from you.

Which is why some people make a strong impression before saying much, and others say all the right things and still can't connect.

People notice more than you think. And they remember longer than you'd expect.
