Communicating Constructively

Avoiding It Does Not Fix It

Note 052 of 62 · 279 words · Learn How To Deal With People

"I should probably say something."

That sentence has weight in it. You know something's wrong. You know the conversation needs to happen. You also know it's going to be uncomfortable.

So you wait.

Waiting feels easier at first. No argument. No tension. No risk of saying it badly.

But things don't disappear because nobody talks about them. They get heavier.

The hardest conversations aren't with strangers. They're with people we care about. The ones closest to us are the hardest to be honest with.

Every relationship that matters eventually meets a conversation nobody wants to have. Disappointment. Expectations. Boundaries. Mistakes.

Nobody has to be in the wrong for it to happen. Sometimes two people just want different things. A life with no conflict would mean nobody cared enough about anything to speak up.

The question isn't whether it happens. It's what happens next.

Most people don't avoid these conversations because they don't care. They avoid them because they do. They don't want to upset anyone or damage anything, so they wait and hope it solves itself.

Sometimes it does. Usually it doesn't. A small misunderstanding becomes frustration. Frustration becomes resentment. Resentment becomes distance.

I watched a small disagreement between teammates turn cold. Not because of anything that got said. Because of the week of silence after it.

I've watched two good friends lose most of a year the same way. It would have taken twenty minutes.

Starting it sounds simple. It rarely feels simple when you're inside it.

The strongest relationships I've seen let people disagree and still protect the relationship. Honestly, respectfully, without trying to destroy each other.

Avoiding it doesn't fix it. Somebody carries the cost later.
